Tongariro National park offers a superb range of short walks, many of them easy and some more difficult. On those that lead into exposed alpine areas walkers should be properly equipped for sudden and harsh weather changes. Winter conditions can also make many of Tongariro's tracks unsuitable for most walkers. If in doubt ask park or hotel staff. Some local walks include:
Tawhai Falls (20mins return) - This easy walk starts at the bottom of the Chateau golf course.
Ridge Track (30mins return) - Starting at the Tongariro National Park Headquarters with views of Mt Ruapehu.
