FOX GLACIER / HOKITIKA / ALPINE EXPRESS / CHRISTCHURCH

  

This morning you can enjoy a leisurely start to the day, or early risers can visit Lake Matheson before breakfast. After breakfast you can take an optional Glacier excursion, choose the a Fox Trail Walk, suitable for varying levels of fitness, or a helicopter ride to the top of Fox Glacier where you land on the glacier for an awesome, snow filled experience. Both Glacier options must be pre-booked (own cost) and are weather and time dependent.

Afterwards, travel to the old gold mining town of Hokitika and visit the Greenstone Factory and Glass Blower.

Continue on to Arthurs Pass and board the Tranz Alpine Express, regarded as one of the great rail journeys of the world, cross over giant viaducts, dark tunnels and valleys backed by stunning mountain scenery. Follow the Waimakariri River and travel through the eastern foothills to the Canterbury Plains.

Continue to Christchurch and transfer to your hotel. Tonight is New Year's Eve, so enjoy the festivities in Christchurch as you celebrate the last night of 2010!

Tonight you will enjoy a special dinner at the Copthorne Central Hotel in Christhurch.  Enjoy the opportunity to celebrate the tour together.
 

Optional Activities

2: Lake Matheson Walk
Get an early start this morning.  Coach out to Lake Matheson, famous for its reflective properties.  See Mt Cook and Mt Tasman reflected in this wonderful lake (clear weather conditions permitting).  A lovely start to the day, co-ordinated by your Coach Captain for the early birds.
 
3: Fox Glacier Trail Walk
This is an informative and leisurely trip to the dynamic face of the glacier. This trip is for people with limited time or for those who would find the walks onto the glacier too strenuous. Although you will not walk on the glacier your guide will take you to the final resting place of the ice that has travelled 13 kilometres from the base of the Southern Alps, all the way to the river valley floor. This two hour trip is reasonably easy going. About one and a half hours is spent walking over gentle terrain, over a river valley floor, at a speed that almost anyone can manage. There is a strong focus on providing you with quality interpretation so you can learn about the glacier and the surrounding environment.  Bookings essential.
 
 
4: Fox Glacier Helicopter Ride
Take a helicopter ride to the top of Fox Glacier where you land on the glacier for an awesome snow filled experience. Must be pre-booked (own cost) and is weather dependant.
