Depart Tongariro National Park and travel to the mountain village of Turangi before continuing on to Lake Taupo and Wairakei. Stop and explore the Wairakei Terraces Walkway. As you stroll through here you will see many Maori tribal effects such as the carving house, food store, fortified village, Poutokowhenua the carved ridge pole, the Blue pools and the Wairakei Terraces. The terraces are man made and demonstrate the speed that silica can build up to make this the crowning jewel in this mystical place. There has been some innovative engineering used here to recreate a steamy silica covered terrace reminiscent of the original pink and white terraces which were destroyed in the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption. Your guide will tell you about this hot and steamy valley. Continue on to Hamilton City, hub of the Waikato and centre of New Zealand’s Dairy farming and thoroughbred industry. Follow the Waikato River through Ngaruawahia and Huntly and cross the Bombay Hills into South Auckland and Auckland City.
